devi

she is known as the goddess of strength, the female aspect of divinity, usually considered to have an equal role with the male aspect as energy or the driving force (shakti), without which the male aspect, is impotent. she holds many items including a sword, bow, shield and conch.

she comes in many aspects. devi is the mother of all living things. her right hand holds joy and pain and her left hand holds life and death. she is a goddess of fertility, rain, health and nature, and holds the entire universe in her uterus. she is also a goddess of death.

bhuvaneshwari

goddess bhuvaneshwari is the preminent and a nurturer of the whole humanity. her appearance is sombre and her complexion is red. she blesses her devotee by making him fearless and also help him in the accomplishment of all the powers. in the scriptures her greatness has been described in detail.

her soft smile gives information about her favour and kindness. a hook and a noose in her hand show her controlling power.

kamakshi

the devi is seated in majestic padmasana posture, showering grace, peace and plenty on those who come for her darshan. besides holding pasa and ankusa on her upper arms, sri kamakshi holds sugar-cane bow and floral arrows in her lower arms.

gayatri

originally the personification of the mantra, the goddess gayatri is considered the veda mata, the mother of all vedas and the consort of the god brahma and also the personification of the all-pervading parabrahman, the ultimate unchanging reality that lies behind all phenomena.

gayatri is typically portrayed as seated on a red lotus, signifying wealth. she appears in either of these forms:-having five heads with the ten eyes looking in the eight directions plus the earth and sky, and ten arms holding all the weapons of vishnu, symbolizing all her reincarnations.

accompanied by a swan, holding a book in one hand and a cure in the other, as the goddess of education.

mariamman

also known as renuka and shitala devi, she is worshipped during the outbreak of epidemics like small pox.special prayers are offered to marriamman by devotees seeking protection from the disease.

durga

durga is a form of saraswati, parvati, lakshmi or devi, the supreme goddess. she is depicted as a woman riding a lion with multiple hands carrying weapons and assuming mudras, or symbolic hand gestures. this form of the goddess is the embodiment of feminine and creative energy (shakti). the form of durga was created as an warrior goddess to fight the demon mahishasura who could not be defeated by any of god or man due to a boon he received after intense prayers to brahma. each god also gave her their own most powerful weapons - shiva's trident, vishnu's discus, indra's thunderbolt, etc.

parvathi

meenakshi

in south india, parvati becomes meenakshi, one with the parrot, symbolising prosperity and fertility.

annapoorni

annapoorneswari is the presiding goddess of kashi (varanasi-- uttar pradesh). the divine mother of the universe not only gives food and riches to her children, but also takes care of their spiritual emancipation by bestowing the nectar of atma gnana - the knowledge of the self. according to the sthala puranam -- the universal mother, who started on a journey down south from badrikasramam decided to stay at varanasi because of the drought for twelve years.
